Opened in April 2009, Cotton Tree is independently owned and operated by Heather Lockington. Inspired by her extensive travels around the world and her Caymanian heritage, Heather has created an authentic haven that effortlessly combines modern design with Caribbean-inspired architecture, art and cuisine. Cotton Tree is a fusion of her island's heritage with her extensive experience as a guest in some of the world's greatest hotels and resorts.

Heather's path to inn keeping is as non-traditional as her unique, four-cottage hotel. Born and raised in the Cayman Islands, her professional life began in banking, followed by an accounting position in a law firm, where she worked for several years before starting a family. As a full-time mother and wife, she began planning to fulfil her lifelong dream of owning and running a boutique luxury hotel in the Caribbean.

After researching the highest-rated hotels throughout the Caribbean, Europe and North America, Heather discovered that no matter how high-end the hotel, the design and style did not often reflect a sense of place or authenticity. But the real catalyst for bringing the dream into reality was a spontaneous encounter during a beach stroll, when she was stopped by a family on holiday asking whether there were any places in Cayman other than traditional-style hotels, where they could feel at home and enjoy true Caribbean feel and flair.

"Their question validated my intuition that the cottage approach would give guests a sense of privacy and sense of place. The cottages are as private as home, but of course not like home at all, unless one lives virtually steps from the beach and has a personal chef!"

Heather's personal touches are what give Cotton Tree distinction, and her vision is uncompromisingly Caymanian. Her interest in fitness inspired the yoga and spa pavilions, and her passion for nature allows guests an insider experience, with bike rides to nearby Barker's National Park, Mastic Trail hikes, and bird watching excursions. Her love of art and architecture is expressed in the original oil paintings and photography adorning the cottages, and the charming beach chic style of the cottages themselves. And the gourmet kitchen, complete with the finest appliances and equipment, not to mention a personal chef on call, speak to her love of fine food and wine.

Now that her dream is reality, Heather is gratified that Cotton Tree is defining a new category of exclusive Cayman Island hotels.
